The Artists - Elspeth
Edmondson
Graphic
artist, collagraphs, artist books, screen print & etchings

| Elspeth Edmondson attended Central Saint Martin's School of Art and Goldsmith's College, London and went on to work as a designer and art director in various design consultancies and advertising agencies in the capitol. She is currently course leader on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme at Blackpool School of Art and Design. She draws her inspiration from her garden in the Lune Valley and from the island of Hoy in the Orkneys and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. By focusing on the simplicity and purity of its form, the artist alters the structure and meaning of a flower through the process of experimental printmaking. In using a single
colour she reinforces and emphasises the flower's stark reality and changes
the relationship and influence of its natural environment.

The textures of
the prints are built up by manipulating a range of media and
materials and using broad brush marks to add character and immediacy to the tonal range. The depth of the tonal quality is constantly reviewed within the process by subtly altering the inks and pressure of the etching press. In addition, the experimental quality of the collagraph printmaking plays an essential role in the process as only a small number of prints are successful. Elspeth is also investigating
a series of typographic images using the flower as her central theme and
applying the traditional letterpress process to explore the language of
flowers.
