The Artists - Bob Armitage
Drawings, mixed media, and prints. Landscape, still life, sky, water and movement.

Studio 9

Working in a mix of media including pencil, charcoal. pastel, watercolour and acrylics on a variety of surfaces, the way of working is decided by the desire to express as much information as can be held by a series of marks. Sometimes the image is highly detailed, other times verging on the abstract. Almost like a dance or a piece of choreography working from actual objects, from a series of photographs or stills from a video, the process creates the final outcome. Sometimes several variations on the same theme, at other times a few marks sum up and create the image. Subjects occur and recur, landscapes, faces, clouds, jet trails, dances, bridges, pieces of architecture, windows, pets and personalities.

The Tango series started from seeing a film outlining the history of the dance, then progressed to learning how to and then reinterpreting the moves and themes through drawing. Landscape themes usually come from returning to the same view many times, on a daily basis, as simply as walking the dog through the nearby lanes. Personalities are the people, family or stars who haunt your memories, your wife, your dog, Marlon Brando, Debbie Harry or Frankie Howard. Sometimes I think I could do it all with just photography especially now it's digital but it doesn't satisfy, as when you physically work all day, tear it all up and start again.
