Paintings and wall-hung constructions, using colour and balance and the intrinsic qualities of found objects.

I make paintings and wall-hung constructions. The work is about colour and balance and the intrinsic qualities of found materials. Much of the wood and other objects for the constructions come from the beaches and estuaries round the UK;  shape and texture provide a starting point. With the paintings, without the suggestive bits and pieces culled from the sea, the blank canvas places more of an emphasis on colour and the vocabulary  of marks and shapes I choose to develop.

A strong element of water and the sea often emerges in the work,  particularly with the constructions. I sometimes incorporate words, either as an allusive text or purely as motifs. Design and symbolism evolve in the course of the making process rather than through following a pre-conceived idea. I usually let the work lead me , spending a good deal of time looking and trying to get a feel for the right  next step. I work in acrylics which make it easy to over paint and change direction if I want to. Completion is that point where the whole thing seems to stand up and bear looking at.
