Studio 10 My recent abstract paintings represent a personal response to the experience of being within a variety of Northern landscapes and environments. Through painting I try to engage with these experiences that are both emotional and sensory. This means that the work is as much about an inner landscape as it is about an outer one. Starting with certain almost ritualistic activities, for example, the layering and banding of paint, the work develops in a quiet and meditative way. There is an elusiveness to the colour that is a result of the layering process, and which is a central aspect in the meaning of the work. The painting reaches completion when an aesthetic balance is achieved that stimulates a contemplative visual engagement. My main aim is to create a ‘breathing space’, wherein there can be found a stillness that is restorative and meaningful. Working in acrylic paint, mixed media and sometimes watercolour, I cite my art historical context as that of the Northern Romantic Tradition, following a lineage through Rothko and the ‘colour-field’ painters of Abstract Expressionism, back to Caspar David Freidrich and J.M.W. Turner. This heritage is expressed through a concern with the communicative potential of colour and surface and reflects a contemporary engagement with notions of the spiritual. |
