Working primarily with drawing and painting, and in response to particular environments, I want to explore the experience of being within landscape rather than to depict it. The environments I choose are those that could be described as wild, or remote, and include areas of the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland, and Spitzbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago. I usually work in series, and with specific projects, many of which have involved collaborating with scientists, whether as an informal arrangement or as part of a specific Art/Science projects. I find the cross fertilisation of ideas and methodologies provide valuable opportunities that can be explored within the studio, and create a rich potential for imaginative transformation.
